While the medical scientific world is focused on the study of acute forms of the SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus, its new strains, and vaccinations, doctors have a new task on the agenda – how to restore health to those who have had COVID-19, especially its severe form?
We talked about the recovery of such patients with the chief physician of the Ayurvedic and Medical Clinic CALENDULA, Doctor Szkopincev Dmitrij.
In recent months, we are increasingly being approached by patients who have undergone Covid of varying severity. Examination of patients shows that if the disease proceeded with complications, complete recovery from the moment of the retreat of its symptoms does not occur. The person did a PCR test – negative, respiratory, and other symptoms that appeared at the time of the virus activity disappeared, but there was no qualitative improvement in well-being. It should be noted that the Coronavirus has different behavioral patterns. In some patients, it manifests itself through the symptoms of an autoimmune disease, primarily related to the circulatory system (micro thrombosis, micro embolism). For others, it is accompanied by severe pain in the joints and muscles. In others, it passes in the form of gastrointestinal disorders: vomiting, diarrhea, stomach or liver pain, colic in the intestines. At the same time, many are characterized by weakness, loss of orientation, changes in the mental state. The insidiousness of the new virus lies in the fact that complications may appear in the distant future.
A vivid example of this is the case history of one patient. Only 30 days later, after her recovery, her saturation (oxygen level in the blood) decreased, she became very weak and short of breath! During the examination, an autoimmune lesion of the vascular bed of the lungs was noted.
We also noticed that Covid exacerbates chronic diseases of the spine and joints. For example, facet syndrome (inflammation of the small joints of the spine) is associated with spondylosis. This did not bother a person for many years, and after the Coronavirus, it worsened quite strongly. Months after the illness, patients continue to experience heaviness in the head, note problems with thinking, concentration, memory, mental disorders. Therefore, the issue of post-ovarian rehabilitation is becoming relevant in the same way as providing intensive assistance to save the life of every person.
We had a patient undergoing treatment who had a severe form of Covid pneumonia. The course of his rehabilitation was 20 days. During this time, the indicators of blood clotting, hemoglobin, liver and kidney functions, and blood sugar have significantly improved. On admission, his saturation level was 95-96%, and on the day of departure from the clinic – 99%. According to the patient, the feeling of heaviness in the head, fatigue, and drowsiness disappeared, now 7 hours of sleep is enough for him to feel vigorous and energetic. Another important indicator is the heart rate. Before treatment, the heart rate was 100-110 beats per minute with a slight load. Now, after 30 squats, his frequency is fixed at a level not exceeding the norm, 90-100 contractions.
We know that with Covid, changes occur in blood clotting, blood clots are formed, and above all, in small vessels. Thrombus formation is associated with inflammation of the intima (the inner layer of the walls of blood vessels), hypoxia – oxygen starvation of certain areas of arteries, veins, and capillaries. In addition to providing the body with blood, the vessels have their circulatory system, they provide themselves with oxygen. Therefore, after a previous illness caused by a Coronavirus infection, such rehabilitation procedures are needed that will restore the vascular system.
In Ayurveda, thousands of years ago, a disease known as Rakta Pitta (dysfunction of red blood cells in the arterial system). It is accompanied by either bleeding or thrombosis. Its Ayurvedic treatment has long been described. We took as a basis the methods of treatment of Rakta-Pitta – hematopoiesis and thrombus formation disorders. These are Ayurvedic medicines, therapeutic baths, massages with special oils, and diet – all aimed at reducing the Pitta (fire) of the blood. And, as practice shows, thanks to an integrated approach, the patient recovers quickly. Improvements are observed even in those aspects that were not expected. For example, after examining the blood before and after rehabilitation, we saw that slightly increased liver transaminase levels decreased to the normal level. Renal filtration was restored. (There is a new understanding that the circulatory system of the liver and kidneys plays a large role, which was previously little paid attention to.) The patient’s testosterone level increased. In this case, herbal remedies of traditional Chinese medicine played a role, promoting the production of free testosterone.
The complex of the above therapies included yoga and remedial gymnastics: they gave an adequate load on the muscular system, very slowly increasing it. We noticed that the muscles’ need for glucose increased, the blood sugar level began to fall to normal values. The syndrome of hyperinsulinemia, which arose in the post Covid period, disappeared.
Let’s take a closer look at Ayurvedic oils: what is their strength? In Ayurveda, most of the treatment takes place through oiling. For this, medicinal oils are used (a set of fat-soluble components found in plants, minerals, animal products, which are extracted with oil). Only fat-soluble substances pass through the dermis. And if we are talking about the whole body, it is easier to give the medicines it needs through the skin than to introduce them through the digestive tract (not the fact that it will digest them). Daily oiling, gentle warming up of the body, sweating can nourish a person and deliver medicinal substances to peripheral target cells. There are a lot of oils used. Take Bala Guduciadi Thajlam (oil), for example. The name of the product contains 2 main plants – Bala (Sida Cordifolia) and Guduci (Tinospora Cordifolia), but besides them, the oil contains many other medicinal herbs. In the classic version, this oil is used for rheumatoid arthritis, joint stiffness, edema, burning sensation in the body and legs. Does it resemble the muscle symptoms experienced by people with Covid? The next oil – Balahatadi – for the treatment and effects on the lining of the brain. Indications: headaches, dizziness, insomnia. It is used for head massage, Shirodhara procedure, it greatly relieves the condition. Another oil based on Sida Cordifolia, or heart-leaved seed, is Bala Aswagandadi. It is used for headaches, exhaustion, lack of strength in joints, muscles, bones, neuralgia, insanity, improves blood quality …
Let’s pay attention to Katam Chukadi Thajlam – oil for those who suffer from edema. It is warm, penetrating, and revealing. It is used for rheumatic syndromes accompanied by pain and swelling.
Puffiness and puffiness also accompany people who have undergone Covid. Edema is, first of all, a violation of blood microcirculation. Back at the beginning of the last century, doctors Abram Zalmanov and Robert Koch suggested that capillaries are small hearts that, by pulsating, help the big heart work. It has now been proven that the capillary system pulsates all the time. The receptors for adrenaline and norepinephrine are located in such a way that their variation causes this pulsation. Swelling occurs in case of slowdown or other disturbances in the capillary network. The turpentine baths proposed by Professor Zalmanov stimulate the work of the capillaries, make them pulsate even faster, as a result of which the oxygenation of the blood increase and blood clots are released. We have been using Zalmanov baths (capillary therapy) for a long time in combination with Ayurvedic therapies. About this technique, you should know that two types of emulsion are used – yellow and white. One is hypotonic, the other is hypertensive. Yellow dilates blood vessels, capillary bed, bringing additional temperature into them, enhances metabolism; white – activates capillary systoles. By the way, emulsions also contain oils.
I would also like to focus on herbal medicine. Chinese doctors, faced with a new disease and taking the first blow, in February 2020, offered the world a Coronavirus treatment protocol. There were indicated both pharmaceuticals (many of them are no longer relevant), and the means of traditional Chinese medicine – for liquefying Phlegm (Mucus), eliminating Cold and Heat syndromes, strengthening the Lungs, fighting toxic Heat (viral bacterial infection). These preparations are based on two plants – Astragalus (Astrāgalus) and Forsythia (Forsythia). Chinese colleagues noted a significant improvement in the condition of those patients who took allopathic drugs and herbal remedies. Since our clinic has its production of medicines from herbs and minerals and all the necessary components are in stock, we made medicines according to the prescriptions of Chinese doctors back in March and are transferring them to patients with Covid. The peculiarity of these drugs is that they are effective in prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. In TCM there are no symptomatic drugs, the effect occurs on a system of mechanisms or patterns. In the case of Coronavirus, the action of drugs is directed at those patterns that weaken the immune system, cause pneumonia and create a toxic state of the body.
Covid will pose many more questions for us, and in our search for answers, we will discover many new things. Nature and its Creator directs us, doctors, to think. Now, more than ever, the question that some of my colleagues have been raising for a long time has become urgent: highly specialized medicine stumbled … The point is that we must see a person as a whole – organs, systems, and their interconnections. Covid causes certain processes not in one part of the body, but everything. We are faced with a disaster that, penetrating the body, begins its destructive effect from the psyche to the musculoskeletal or endocrine system. A pulmonologist or cardiologist cannot deal with this alone. You need to work with subtle things as well. The doctor’s task is to take the patient by the hand and guide him through a very narrow and fragile bridge over the abyss until he stands on solid ground.
