Kaya Chikitsa, or internal medicine: the diagnosis and treatment of common diseases affecting the whole body. Translated from Sanskrit, “kaya” means “the whole body”. General medicine is an analogue in allopathic medicine.
Kaya chikitsa is also called the science of diseases caused by an imbalance of the digestive fire (agni) or disorder of istotrophic nutrition. Regardless of whether the disease is caused by internal or external reasons, it develops precisely due to digestive disorders. Therefore, treatment is primarily aimed at normalizing the flow of internal fire (agni). Kaya chikitsa includes methods of diagnosis, detoxification (Panchakarma), herbs and Ayurvedic medicines; it is considered the main science of health.
