Internal medicine and gastroenterology

Early career

Janos Kersak was born in 1943 in Tamási into a family of teachers. He received his primary and secondary education in his hometown.

From 1962 to 1968, he studied at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Pécs. He was involved in research from his student years: from 1964 at the Institute of Physiology, and from 1966 in the student research group of the First Department of Internal Medicine.

In 1968, he received his medical degree and began working in the First Internal Medicine Department of Siófok City Hospital when it opened.

Developing gastroenterology care

In 1973, he passed the specialist examination in internal medicine and organised the hospital’s gastroenterology unit, which had not previously been operational.

Under his leadership, diagnostic abdominal laparoscopies and needle biopsies were performed. Gastrointestinal endoscopic examinations were introduced in 1974.

From 1980, he worked as an assistant/senior physician, and from 1990 as head of department, leading the internal medicine and gastroenterology service. In 1994, he qualified as a specialist in gastroenterology.

Research and teaching

One area of his work is the endoscopic control of severe bleeding from ulcers. The endoscopic injection haemostasis method he developed was published in 1997 in the ‘Clinical Studies’ section of Orvosi Hetilap. The results were presented at national professional forums and contributed to improved care for patients with bleeding ulcers.

He participated in the professional training of nursing and allied healthcare staff. For many years, he was a national delegate of the Hungarian Medical Chamber and served as secretary of the graduate staff branch at Siófok Hospital within EDDSZ.

Awards and continued practice

In 1998, he was awarded the Semmelweis commemorative medal, and in 2001 the ‘For Siófok’ commemorative plaque for his work for the city.

After more than 40 years at the hospital, he ended his hospital career at the age of 67 while continuing to practise medicine. From 2010 to October 2025, he was medical director of the Siófok branch of Endomedix Kft.

In 2018, on the 50th anniversary of his medical career, which coincided with the city’s 50th anniversary, he was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of Siófok.

Since November 2025, he has continued his work in internal medicine and gastroenterology at Calendula clinic.
