Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology

Early professional career

János Kersák was born in 1943 in Tamási into a family of teachers. He completed his primary and secondary education in his home town.

From 1962 to 1968 he studied at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Pécs. He was already involved in research as a student: from 1964 at the Institute of Physiology and from 1966 in the student research group of the First Department of Internal Medicine.

In 1968, he received his medical degree and began work in the First Department of Internal Medicine at Siófok City Hospital from the time it opened.

Development of gastroenterology services

In 1973, he passed the specialist examination in internal medicine and organised the hospital’s gastroenterology service, which had not previously been operating.

Under his direction, diagnostic abdominal laparoscopies and needle biopsies were performed. Gastroenterological endoscopic examinations were introduced from 1974.

From 1980, he worked as an assistant/senior physician, and from 1990 as head of department, leading the internal medicine and gastroenterology service. In 1994, he obtained a specialisation in gastroenterology.

Research and teaching

One area of his work has been endoscopic control of massive ulcer bleeding. The endoscopic injection haemostasis method he developed was published in 1997 in the Clinical Studies section of Orvosi Hetilap. The results were presented at national professional forums and contributed to improved care for patients with ulcer bleeding.

He participated in the professional training of nursing and allied medical staff. For many years he was a national delegate of the Hungarian Medical Chamber and served as secretary of the qualified primary organisation of Siófok Hospital within EDDSZ.

Awards and subsequent practice

In 1998 he received the Semmelweis Commemorative Medal, and in 2001 the “For Siófok” commemorative plaque for his work for the benefit of the city.

After more than 40 years of hospital work, he ended his hospital career at the age of 67 while continuing medical practice. From 2010 to October 2025, he was Medical Director of the Endomedix Kft. unit in Siófok.

In 2018, on the 50th anniversary of his medical career, which coincided with the city’s 50th anniversary, he was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of Siófok.

Since November 2025, he has continued to work in internal medicine and gastroenterology at Calendula Clinic.
