About this area of care

Coordinated control of blood pressure, glucose and risk factors for the heart and kidneys

When high blood pressure and high blood sugar occur separately or together, it is important to look beyond the numbers on the blood pressure monitor and glucose meter. These conditions can increase strain on the kidneys, heart, brain and blood vessels in the eyes, so they require coordinated decisions that protect the body as a whole.

This care is suitable for people with arterial hypertension, type 2 diabetes or both, particularly when the reasons for inadequate control need assessment and further treatment needs coordination.

At CALENDULA, medical support is combined with personalised nutrition, movement and supportive methods from Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine. We assess how medicines, meal routines, physical activity and procedures fit together, making the plan understandable and manageable in everyday life.

The main principle is organ protection and addressing identified risk factors. Traditional methods are selected as additions to necessary treatment, not as a reason to stop it. The doctor assesses possible changes to medication based on observations.

Who this care is for

  • For arterial hypertension, alone or alongside other risk factors.
  • For type 2 diabetes, alone or alongside hypertension.
  • When readings are inadequately controlled or there are concerns about treatment tolerance.
  • For coexisting problems with lipid metabolism, weight and physical activity.
  • For those wishing to coordinate nutrition, self-monitoring and further medical follow-up.
  • For those considering herbal medicine, body treatments and restorative procedures as additions to treatment under medical supervision.

Medical assessment and strategy

Review of your current condition. The doctor reviews medical history, home blood pressure and glucose readings, episodes of low blood sugar, current medicines and wellbeing.

Metabolic and kidney function assessment. When indicated: HbA1c, creatinine, estimated glomerular filtration rate, urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio and a lipid profile. These measures help assess diabetes control and the condition of organs it may affect.

Personal targets. Blood pressure and glucose goals take account of age, coexisting conditions and the risk of hypoglycaemia. For many patients, the doctor may consider blood pressure below 130/80 mmHg if well tolerated; an individual target is determined at consultation.

Organ-focused treatment. Necessary blood pressure, glucose and lipid medicines are discussed. When appropriately indicated, the doctor considers medicines with heart or kidney benefits: ACE inhibitors or angiotensin receptor blockers, SGLT2 inhibitors (SGLT2 is a glucose transport protein in the kidneys; blocking it helps remove excess sugar through urine), and GLP-1 receptor agonists (glucagon-like peptide-1 is a hormone involved in regulating blood sugar and appetite). They act differently and are selected individually, not prescribed as one standard set.

A programme tailored to you

Medical support. Monitoring treatment tolerance, reviewing measurements and adjusting treatment where needed. Changes in nutrition and procedures are coordinated with glucose-lowering treatment.

Ayurvedic support. Snehana oil treatments and gentle Svedana warming may be used as supportive relaxation methods after contraindications are assessed. Internal Panchakarma procedures are considered separately because of possible effects on nutrition and fluid balance.

Nutrition. A diet tailored to you considering carbohydrate load, salt, body weight and kidney function. A routine is selected that can be continued at home.

Movement and self-regulation. Suitable therapeutic exercise, gentle qigong, yoga and pranayama. Intensity takes account of the heart, blood vessels, feet and peripheral nerves.

Body treatments. Shirodhara, suitable massage, lymphatic drainage and acupuncture may complement the individual plan and help reduce tension. Zalmanov baths require a separate assessment, particularly when sensation is impaired.

CALENDULA herbal medicine. Personalised herbal formulations from the Calendula Pharma laboratory are selected according to the individual’s health picture. Alongside glucose-lowering medicines, monitoring for possible additional reductions in glucose is particularly important, so each formulation is checked for interactions with current treatment.

Additional methods. Physiotherapy platforms, metameric methods and device-assisted lymphatic drainage are selected for a separate clinical goal; they are not offered as universal treatments for diabetic neuropathy.

The scope and duration of care are determined after the initial examination, taking account of indications, contraindications and medicines. Reducing the number of medicines is not a mandatory course outcome.

Course goals and final consultation

Assess blood pressure and glucose control, treatment tolerance and progress in learning self-monitoring. You receive coordinated recommendations for treatment, nutrition, activity and test schedules. Chest pain, sudden neurological symptoms, severe breathlessness or impaired consciousness require urgent care.
