Dr. János Kersák was born in 1943 in Tamási, into a family of teachers. He completed both his primary and secondary education in his hometown. Between 1962 and 1968, he studied at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Pécs, where he already became involved in scientific work as a student: from 1964 he worked at the Institute of Physiology, and from 1966 he participated in the Scientific Students’ Association of the First Department of Internal Medicine.

Dr. János Kersák obtained his medical degree in 1968 and began his medical career at the First Department of Internal Medicine of the Siófok City Hospital, where he worked from the hospital’s opening. In 1973, he passed his specialist exam in internal medicine and subsequently organized the hospital’s then non-operational gastroenterology unit. Under his leadership, diagnostic abdominal laparoscopies and needle biopsies were performed, and from 1974 gastroenterological endoscopic examinations were introduced. From 1980 he worked as an assistant professor, and from 1990 as head of department chief physician, leading internal medicine and gastroenterology care. In 1994 he also passed his specialist exam in gastroenterology.

In the field of gastroenterology, outstanding results were achieved in the endoscopic control of severe ulcer bleeding. The endoscopic injection hemostasis method developed by Dr. János Kersák was published in 1997 in the Clinical Studies section of Orvosi Hetilap, and their results were presented at numerous national professional forums. Their work significantly improved the prognosis of ulcer bleeding, which previously had a high mortality rate, thereby saving many patients’ lives.

During his career, he also took part in the professional training of mid-level healthcare staff and played an active role in professional public life: for years he served as a national delegate of the Hungarian Medical Chamber, and also acted as secretary of the Graduate Basic Organization of the Siófok Hospital within the EDDSZ.

His work was recognized with several awards: in 1998 he was awarded the Semmelweis Memorial Medal, and in 2001 he received the “For Siófok” commemorative plaque for his contributions to the city. After more than four decades of hospital service, he ended his hospital career at the age of 67, but continued his medical activity.

Between 2010 and October 2025, he worked as the medical director of the Siófok branch of Endomedix Ltd., and from November 2025 he continues his internal medicine and gastroenterology practice within Calendula Ltd. In 2018, on the occasion of his 50-year medical career — coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the city of Siófok — he was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of Siófok.
