Pain is the one thing that modern medicine cannot measure. Yet we have headaches many times in our lives. And 10% of the population regularly suffer from symptoms of migraine headaches in recurrent attacks. Although the causes of headaches may vary and the pain cannot be measured, both ancient Eastern and modern Western medicine are well aware of the fact that people have had headaches since ancient times. If you suffer from headaches, this article can help you treat and prevent them.
Although many people suffer from it, headaches don't actually exist outside our „skull.” This is because headaches mostly originate in the skull, a change in the condition of the tissues surrounding the brain. Our brain (our head) cannot hurt directly because it has no pain receptors. The headache is caused by inflamed, strained tissue in the skull, from the neck and from a mental state comes from most of the time. Because pain is processed by the brain, the intensity of pain varies from person to person. In addition, our mental state can also increase the intensity of the headache.
According to experts, there are at least 13 types of headache, but the easiest way to distinguish between them is whether or not they are indirectly caused by a disease. Headaches are not a disease, they are a symptom - even if they are not caused by a disease. To be able to treat and prevent headaches properly, you need to know the causes of headaches.
Secondary headaches are triggered by diseases or certain conditions in the body. This can be a hangover, a headache caused by a change of front, but it can also be triggered by a tooth infection or sinusitis. Headaches can also be caused by untreated myopia or farsightedness, as well as by changes in the cervical spine. Contrary to misconception, persistent high blood pressure is not a cause, but sudden spikes in blood pressure can be.
There is no specific underlying disease behind the primary headache, the
the headache comes on its own. Underlying causes of primary headache
but there are also spiritual reasons, and our lifestyle is also very much
can affect. Sleeplessness can be one of these triggers.
Tension headache is one of the most common, with 80% of cases. Tension headaches are often caused by stress, tension in the muscles of the head, changes in blood flow to the brain and pain. Tension headaches are the easiest of all to treat, responding well to painkillers, but some physical activity or a walk in the fresh air can also be beneficial.
Such headaches often occur during the day and present as dull aches and pains. It can be treated well with essential oils, herbal remedies, massage and soothing treatments.
Cluster headache is the least common, affecting about 0.1% of the population, and is most common in men who smoke heavily. The pain is episodic, can occur for weeks, and is regular, lasting 1-2 hours, with severe, excruciating, unilateral headaches associated with a runny nose and unilateral tearing.
Migraine headache is the second most common headache, affecting nearly 10% of the population. Migraine headaches are most common in women and can also be triggered by changes in hormone levels, often occur alongside menstrual irregularities, digestive upset, stress and self-esteem problems.
Migraine headaches come in attacks, with nausea, severe nausea, balance problems, fatigue, visual and speech problems, and sensitivity to external influences. Migraine sufferers often have to wait until their attacks are over before they can go to bed. Migraines typically occur in attacks, and are a side-to-side, very severe, throbbing pain.
Migraines are three times more common in women than in men and peak between the ages of 30 and 40. With menopause, migraines also disappear.
The causes of migraine headaches are unknown and modern medicine has not found a direct cause. However, migraines are known to be genetically inherited, so if there is a family history of migraines, there is a good chance that we could inherit them. Migraines tend to multiply as a result of physical and mental imbalances.
The causes of migraine headaches are thought to be caused by an imbalance of yin and yang in ancient Eastern medicine. Yang is the energy circulating in the body, which in migraines gets stuck in a particular part of the head, so it is the imbalance that causes the pain. According to Chinese medicine, the treatment of migraines is twofold: the cause and the symptom must be treated simultaneously.
Migraine headaches can only be diagnosed by asking questions. If two of the four questions are true, you can be sure you have a migraine:
- There is a strong throbbing, side-to-side pain in the head lasting 4-72 hours;
- the pain increases with physical activity;
- we are sensitive to light and sound;
- nausea, in more severe cases vomiting.
To help decipher the causes of migraines, it helps to keep a headache diary - writing down when, how often, what food and drink, stress effect and after how much sleep the migraine headache occurred.
Treatment of migraine headaches should start by identifying the underlying causes. It is most often caused by lifestyle, or excessive stress and sleep deprivation predisposes you to migraines or other psychological causes. Untreated psychological trauma, ongoing anxiety and uncertainty can also contribute to the development of migraines.
Migraines cannot be treated with simple painkillers, and frequent use can lead to what is known as analgesic withdrawal headache. If you have more than four migraines a month, it is worth treating the underlying cause.
